Dog Training Controlled Retrieving Continued | Dog Training For Dummies

Dog Training Controlled Retrieving Continueddog training

The beginning exercises should be conducted with the dog unleashed and the collar placed around his neck, at his handlers side in a controlled position and both facing directly into the wind. The instructor who will throw the retrieving dummy should be about fifteen metres upwind and to the left of the handler and dog. (At this point it should be noted that the instructor should have only the one retrieving dummy with it in his possession while standing upwind of the dog.) The instructor should call the dogs name to get his attention and wave the retrieving dummy in the air while the handler simultaneously verbally stimulates the dog to a high degree of excitement. When the instructor determines the dogs attention is directed toward the retrieving dummy, and his peak of excitement has been reached, the dummy should be thrown in the air and directly into the wind, away from the dog. When the retrieving dummy has reached its apex, the handler should release the dog, commanding him to FETCH, to locate and retrieve the dummy.

If the distance the dummy has been thrown is about thirty metres from the dog, normally it will land on the ground before the dog reaches his location. As this occurs, the wind will carry the narcotic odour directly toward the dog, and he should not experience any difficulty in locating it. As soon as the dog locates and picks up the retrieving dummy, the handler should encourage him to retrieve it and play the tug of war game. After the instructor has thrown the retrieving dummy and while the dog is hunting, he should not move about or create any other distractions.

During the next retrieve exercise the distance from where the dog is located to where the retrieving dummy will fall should be increased. The handler should not release the dog until the retrieving dummy has been thrown and is falling to the ground. The use of wind direction will be as in the previous exercise. Remember as the difficulty is gradually increased in each exercise, the dog is induced to use his sense of smell to detect and locate the odour and retrieving dummy.
